Tug - 10 days left before IM Lanzarote. All the major training is in the bank, now it's time to relax and taper (and not get to fidgety!!)

One of the things that might help is to come a week early to acclimate yourself to the altitude. Do some riding, and some running too. I live outside of Boulder and have done this race before and it is a good half ironman to do, good luck!!

Hello. This summer I will be doing a ½ IM in Boulder. I live at sea level and have never raced above 5000 feets of height.

Anyone have any experience, any precautions or advise I should follow?

It's going GREAT Tug - Thanks for asking. Everything is ramping up nicely, and we're getting into better weather. Don't think I'll be TOTALLY prepared for hotter/humid weather, but few others will either. About 11 weeks until I'll be dangling my toes in the eastern side of the Atlantic....and I'm not getting nervous at all. Lanzarote is gonna be a BLAST!!

Kevin good to hear from you! Also great to hear that you have enjoyed the time away from the serious training. I too will have to start looking for the pool. Good luck.

Because IMMoo is not until Sept. I'm trying something different this year. I'm going to run the Colorado Marathon May 1st. It starts outside of Ft. Collins Co. in the hills and ends up in the town. It looks pretty cool. I'm hoping to finish in a P.R. so that my legs will remember the pace for Madison. That will leave 4 months until IMMoo to get some good biking/swimming in too.

Again good luck locating the pool next week for your ramp-up for IMLanz!! cheesehead

Tug - I'm here....lurking as usual. I check-in weekly just to see what's up. Lanzarote is 4 months from 21 Jan, so that's when the REAL training will start. Been running for fun (half-Mary on Saturday), and biking for enjoyment. Can't remember where the pool is actually located.

Looking forward to the challenge, then turning around for IM Moo!!

Kevin

This page looks like it could use some chatter.

Went back to look at old posts on this page and was seeing if Teggs or CityGirl are lurking. Kevin how is training going for IMLanz? Teggs were you able to sign up on-line for this years 2011 race? Would be nice to see some chatter from other IMWisconsin athletes. This will be my first IMWisconsin and looking forward to it.

I did IMSt. George last May, how do the hills in Madison compare to Utah? Does anyone know? The finish line looks pretty cool too?

Hope to see some response. cheesehead

Hi peeps from Allen of the arnge page.

Anyone here or lurking done IM Louisville? If it isn't full it means somethings difficult about it.

I figure it's the heat and no wetsuits. But I train in the heat most of the year.

The hills? Looks and is proclaimed rolly but nothing like Silverman.

IM serious about signing up so if anyone knows the skinny let me know.

could i use a regular walmart type of bike or a all-purpose bike ( road and dirt?)
-
i know going cheep is not the best way but i want to make sure this is what i want to do before i sink a lot of money into good performance parts.

and i see it like this

if a great pro can win a game or a match with a awsome pair or shoes or gloves ,why couldn't he or she do the same thing in a not so good pair or just avg. equipment.
any great person doing great thing needs to know how to use the avg equipment before moving on to the good stuff. this is also just my view on it.

Shane as long as there is no motor on your bike I think you can ride any type you want and afford. Best bet is to go to your bike store ask them to fit you on a good racing bike. Comfort & fit are priority.

Good afternoon, I am brand spanking new to doing ironman race but this is a event i am wanting and willing to do.
I have done research on the ironman sites and found a good bit of information but not the informatin i am needing. i am not asking for the answers but only links to where i can find the answers i am looking for.
Here are my question i need help on.

(btw i am starting off with the ironman sprint and will build my way up to a full iron man over a 2-5 year period)

- i need to know what bike types are approved for the ironman race. ( i have not found any information on the safty parts or type of bike that will be approved for this race.)

-what running shoes and what type of clothing is approved by ironman?

- i did find the swimsuits but what are good prices for a suit and what is the best place to buy one?

- i did not find a list of approved drugs and dis-approved drugs that can be takin. ( i am on a steriod for my asmtha so this is where i need a full list of medication that can not be takin as well over the over-the counter meds. like " hydroxcut, creatin, and certian vitimans. ect.ect")

- I do know that most of these question are newbie questions but i came at a stand still with little time to sign up for the sprint in texas.

-please reply back with no back-lash to my stupidity . i am only trying to get on the right direction.

thank you for your time and information.

I ASSume you are asking about the water in reference to any oil, and not temperature.

I've been in the Gulf here at Pensacola MANY times, and nothing oil-wise for the last 2 months, so I ASSume that it'll be G2G 80 miles east of here.

As per tempertature, EVERYONE assures me that it will cool down in 8 more days, and will be wetsuit legal.

I think I'll skip ALL teh pre-race burritos.

My "roughset" day was IM AZ. I did all the proper preperation up to 5 days BEFORE the event, then had TOO MUCH FUN!!. Even went as far as to have a BIG burrito dinner (with beer of course) the night before. Swim SUCKED, and after the first loop on the bike, my wife commented about the dust on my arms......it was SALT! Survivied the bike in my slowest ever, and then started the run nice...until the 5.5 mile point where I EXPLODED, and had to walk the last 21 miles. Still finished just in fron to Rudy in 15:40, but it wasn't pleasent.

Good learning experiance though.

Hey Kevin good to hear you have a reservation. I could not believe how fast the hotels filled up there. Then I found out that ironman books the hotels for that week. After speaking with some of the hotel's directly, a couple of months before the race they will open any rooms that did not get reserved thru ironman. The host hotel said that usually a number of rooms become available just before the race. So booking a room now is good, but check back as the time gets closer. razz (stick out tongue)

This page doesn't look like it gets very much chatter, so its good to see you on it. Is this your first ironman? I was shocked I was able to land a spot with all the difficulties the site had.

Teggs...

Normally the IMoo fills up quickly. I think in 2009...it filled up in a couple of hours. That is why this year, I, too, drove up to sign up in person. It turns out it didn't fill up for a couple of days at least. Maybe it was due to the economy...who knows. I would agree that if you want to get in for sure, your chances are best to sign up on site in case this year it goes quickly.

Who out there is trying an IM for the first time? Who has done this before?

Intensity! I've gotten comfortable with what I've be doing for so many years. With the higher intensity and the stresses on the body, probably incorporate more days off. Thats been a problem in the past.

Additionally, I'll try to work in more long distance rides (over 100 miles) and definately more running miles.

My best time is 11:16 and I'd really like to break 11.

And everyone else?? What are your changes for this new year?

It's the last day of the year and my official training season begins tomorrow. I've calculated the number of training hours I need to put in between now and Sept. based on bike speed, running pace and available swimming times. I haven't tried this before but if I come close the the goal hours I'll put in more miles than any year before. I know running, especially, I really need to increase the milage.

Since I can't bike outside and running is sometimes prohibitive, I'll still calculate in training hours on the stationary bike and treadmill if necessary.

Can't wait to get started!!

Steve seems like i decent schedule
i live in the netherlands and also starts biking in april outside. I do not
use a indoor trainer . I attend 2 or 3
spinning classes ( 1 hour session) each week.
MY run average is about 40 miles per week, and i bike each year about 6000 miles. Swimming 3 1 hours sessions each week.
Ironman time about 12 hours , best time
11.17 whwn i was 50 years yound , no 15 years later i am slower wink

So i think you are on the right track , in my opinion i do not think you have to swim 10 miles per week. the swim part
is comparing to the other parts ( biking
and running) much sorter so why spent to much time swimming confused

train safe
