I am signed up for IM France '08. Can't tell from the website generally what the temps are like...especially whether the swim is wetsuit legal. Also I'd love to see an elevation profile of the course. The description is pretty good.

Just wondering,
When travelling to Ironman UK from Canada is it best to ship the bike to a racesite destination or to just take it with you on the plane? Does anybody know of a racesite destination for Ironman UK? Thanks |

EB, I've done Arizona the last 3 years, I really enjoy the course. Its very flat, spectator friendly (3 loop bike and run). The hardest part of the day is the unknown factors of heat and wind. In '05 and '07 the wind was a huge factor, 20-30 mph. '06 was very hot on race day, which being from Canada I wasn't ready for.
Come on over to the GoldRush page, the yellow one at the top, I think the majority of us on the page have done the race and can give you info. |

Hi I am from South Africa...intermediate athlete with two Ironmen behind me (South Africa and Australia). Looking to enter IM Arizona anyone out there done this race and can give me a reason not to do it....as the timing works relative to other North American Ironmen races (not having to train in Wineter in South Africa)....input much appreciated

Hi All,
I'm doing the Florida half in May 2007. I live in Bermuda but am from Australia. I am hoping to share accomm/taxi or car hire with someone from 17th to 21st of May, and hang out during the registration and check in process. I guess I am looking for someone in the same boat as me, that is, no family or other supporters. If you are part of a bigger group maybe you would be happy to have me join you? I am 29, professionally employed. This is my first half, although come from a cycling background at a reasonably high standard. You can contact me on the email listed. Cheers adam |

Verby, I did IMAZ twice, and both times I didn't see any hills on the bike course, there are no hills in IMAZ the course is all pretty flat, I used 54-39 front ring and kept it on the big ring the whole way, and I have a 11-23 on the back. I'm what you might call a mid packer on the bike and I found no problem useing my gears. the only climbing is a gradule incline up the bee-line, you will find the course is very fast, but be prepaired for anything, like extreme heat like this past year or high winds like the year before. hope this helps, if you have anymore questions come on to the CALIFORNIA / ARIZONA / SOUTHWEST chat page, which we call the goldrush page, there are lot's of folks that would be glad to answer your questions on Arizona IM ( IMAZ )

Hi:
I'm considering doing one of the following IM races in Europe in 2007: IM Austria, IM Germany, IM Switzerland, or IM United Kingdom. Does registration for those races close out really fast, such as in less than 24 hours after opening, like IM Florida or other IM races in North America do? Also, I suppose the cost of any of those European races would be about the same relative to each other. Does anyone know if that is a fair assumption? Thank you Bill Georgia, USA |

hello all: has anyone purchased or heard good or bad things about the boxset of Kona Ironman DVDs that they sell on the ironman website store.
They are darn expensive, but I am thinking they may be a great way to gain knowledge about the course, not to mention inspiration, given that this is my first go at it and likely my last --at least for a long time-- and I will not have much time at all to check out the course in person, thanks! |

#145 g Subject: you guys don't read...
The poster said they had just done IM Brazil. SO.. obviously they HAVE THE CASH and are WILLING TO TRAVEL TO A MORE EXOTIC LOCATION.
Therefore it makes sense to recommend a nicer destination race than Arizona! C'mon, Arizona is nice, but it ain't all that. It's convenient, so big whoop. I'll see Arizona when I turn 60 and buy an RV, like everyone else. Until then, I'll go to cool overseas races, where I have to learn the word for "water" to yell at the aid stations. |

#144 FELTBOY Subject: Stupid is as Stupid does
Willem,
While sitting at a stop light in my new '05 Bentley, I noticed someone pull up next to me in a 2001 Saturn. For a moment I had to laugh. I asked myself, "Why would anyone drive that car, when you could be behind the wheel of a Bentley?". Which reminded me of the time when I was eating dinner at The Ivy in Los Angeles. I looked out the window only to notice a guy eating the remains of a BigMac from a trash can. Appalled at the scene, I put my mint julep down, sat back from my dungeness crab salad and said to my wife, "Look darling. Why would anyone eat like such a pauper when they could be having such a lovely dinner like us?". THE JAPAN v ARIZONA COMMENT IS BY FAR THE STUPIDEST COMMENT I HAVE EVER SEEN ON THIS PAGE. IT SURPASSES COMMENTS LIKE THAT OF JESSICA SIMPSON WHERE SHE DIDN'T KNOW THAT "CHICKEN OF THE SEA" ISN'T REALLY CHICKEN. |

#139 Ruben Subject: IM AZ
AVI:
Can't comment on IM Japan, but AZ was a great race in my opinion. Here is my best recap: Swim: Tempe Town Lake was on the bit cool side (65 or 68F) calm with plenty of room and landmarks, because of the bridges(great for spectators)navigating was easy. Water was murky but tasted sweet! Bike: Last minute changes forced a 3loop with a small "city" loop. Flat course with some rough streets, but not much. Overall a good course. Word is next year they will make the change back to the originally proposed 2 loops. Run: Flat. A combination of sidewalks, and dirt trails. Double loop, along Papago Park (something like that). The heat was never a factor on race day, however the wind gusts were reported up to 40mphs. I talked to several people that were knocked-off the bike. Tempe, AZ was great. The venue was within walking distance of a few hotels, and restaurants. This was a big plus for me and the family. The volunteers were in full force! Hope this helps |

OOPS, my bad, You were refering to the ambient temp and not the water temp!!! Whew!! Thank God!! Still, 3C is pretty cold to start a race!!!

cadunn@hotmail.com
WOW!!! That's a c-c-c-cold swim!!!! I think I will buy a neopreme head cover too!!! I live in central Arkansas and there is a small lake outside of town. I think I will go measure the temp. It can't be that cold, and it's the start of winter.
Thanks for the info, it will prove to be valuable. I have been reading everything I can about NZ and I'm excited about competing there. Just a little nervous. Not too much though. I signed up for a tour with a company in Australia so they will get me to the race and provide support while I am there, plus, a couple of sightseeing tours of the North Island is included. |

#134 tom Subject: NZ
Charlie, I seem to remember that the temperature was only about 3 or 4 C. after exiting the swim. There were some that could not continue on the bike.(take some armwarmers)By the time we started running the temp had risen to +30 C. I think that this was not a usual day. You have to remember that March is the end of their summer so it does cool off at night. Lake Taupo is a great site for a IM and the people really come out to support it. Huge crowds that are very enthusiastic. We live in Courtenay, BC on the west coast so it makes it a little tougher to train for such an early season IM. It was worth it though, NZ is a great country to visit. Check out their website, I'm sure you will find answers to most of your questions. Good luck

Tom, thanks for the info. I think I remember reading somewhere that the race was moved from Aukland to Taupo.
What were the temps when you did the race? The road surface you mentioned is something we call "chip and seal." Oh yeah, where do you live?? |
|
#132 tom Subject: IMNZ
Charlie, windjunkee's comments are not going to mean much. If he did the race in 97 I think it would be on the old Aukland course. I did IMNZ in 2000 at Lake Taupo and we had a great time. There were only about 750 entrants that year but I think its well over a 1000 by now. The lake was a little cool from what I remember, wetsuits definitely advised. Roads are a little rough for riding, they use that sealcoated gravelly pavement. The run was an out and back 2 loop along the lake. Lots to do after the race; bungee jumping, jet boats, caving, gigantic trout fishing etc. I noticed on there website that NZ Air was offering bike charges of NZ$20. each way, check it out. I highly recommend the race, you will love it there.

Thanks for the reply, you can't emagine what it means to me.
I will have to change planes in LA, Most likely come in on Southwest then out on NZ Air. What kind of time am I looking at to get through customs? Did you have to pay extra for your bike? I will have to pay $70 both ways on Southwest and NZ Air. Grrr. I'm surprised about the lake being warm, I thought it was a cold, mountain lake. Did you get to wear a wetsuit? What were the temps during the bike and run portions? Unfortunately, I am in the same boat as you were concerning fitness, I have been nursing a groin pull for the past month and have lost a lot. The only thing that keeps me going is that I am able to bike and swim without it bothering the injury. I finished IM Wisconsin in 2002 under similar circumstances and learned there that I can run/walk the marathon. Of course, I only wanted to finish at IMOO and had hoped to PR at IMNZ. Ah well, we take what we can get, huh? |

#130 windjunkee
Hey Charlie,
Saw your post on the AZ page. I did IMNZ in '97. My previous IM experience was all in the 80's, when I did Kona '85 and '86 and Canada '86. My trip to NZ was great, though the race was not a high point, hate to say. There were about 1200 in the race. The swim was beautiful and the water warm. I live in Los Angeles. The flight was long but not unbearable. My wife and I stayed in a hotel near the course. It was unremarkable and I don't remember the name of it off hand. The bike portion was a loop course, rolling hills, not too difficult. It was the run that killed me. It was a series of three spokes, all out/back. I went into the race severely undertrained and blew up on the run, thus, each time I passed the finish area, I was begging to stop. We stayed 5 days in Auckland for the race, then rented a car and spent a week touring the Northern portion of the North Island. THAT part was memorable. I remember we stayed one night in this great lodge on the Bay of Islands. Only maybe 5 or 6 rooms, with communal meals, and small power boats for each set of guests to cruise the bay on. The tour we did after the race was really the high point of the trip. I've sorta blocked the course from my memory though, because it was NOT a good race for me. Wish it had been better because it was a great vacation otherwise. Would I do it again? Probably not ... but for other personal reasons, not the course or the way the race was managed. I'm doing AZ because its close. Hope this little bit helps |
