I am traveling to Kona with a professional athlete who will be competing this year.
Dates: 10/5-10/21. We got bumped from a homestay this past week. If anyone has any leads on an affordable accommodation that we might be able to rent (or share with) for our dates indicated above, we would very much appreciate your help. I can be reached at my email address attached. Best, Linda |

#72 Mouse Subject: Royal Sea Cliff
peaman@gte.net
Royal Sea Cliff is less than two miles from The Pier and the start/finish line, on Ali'i Drive. It's just town-side of Casa de Emdeko.
FYI - I think Ironman will doing the same thing again, hiring a local shuttle service to go along Ali'i Drive in the early morning hours and again in the evening, giving athletes and volunteers a ride to and from their condos. It helps alleviate the problem of trying to find a parking spot in the dark and trying to find your car again later. Check the Info Booth race week. |

#68 puskas Subject: Training?
impuskas@yahoo.com
I thought we just rode out our fitness from June
I'm just going to enjoy the event...There are too many variables to consider for such an unplanned event (I had no intention of qualifying, but had a good day at CdA). I think I'll just enjoy looking at the Lava, staying warm in the heat, feeling the winds roll across my body, and the finish line carpet under my feet. |

#62 Mouse Subject: Kona Haw'n Village
peaman@gte.net
Aaron-
The Kona Hawaiian Village Condos are less than a mile and a half from King Kam Hotel, on Ali'i Drive. Surviving without a car would be a definite yes. All you would need would be transportation from the airport. There is a local transfer company called SpeediShuttle which offers a special rate at Ironman time. I'll get their rates and info for this year and post it at a later date. |
|
#61 Aaron
Does anyone know about how far the Kona Hawaiian Village condos are from the King K? I was hoping that they are close enough that I wouldn't need to rent a car while in town for the race. A friend is offering me the use of his pad...

#59 Mouse Subject: start/finish Kona
peaman@gte.net
If your accomodations are three miles from town, then you'll be three miles from the start, transition, and finish area and everything that's associated with the race. You'll also be three miles from The Pier where everyone goes in the morning to swim, look, be seen, and hang out. The temporary race office, registration, the transition area, carbo and awards banquets will be in the King Kam Hotel which is also right there next to The Pier. In Kailua-Kona, everything is close.
Either your accomodations are on or slightly off of Ali'i Drive which will be cool as you'll be able to do most of your commuting by bike (traffic gets very slow and thick during race week). Or ir may be up and off of Palani Road in one of the older subdivisions, in which case a car may be a bit more desirable as going up and down Palani Road is a little hairy and will be extra work on your legs when they should be starting to rest. I forgot to mention that you can get the book through Amazon if your local book store doesn't have it (which it probably won't unless). |

Hi Mouse, I've been offered a room to rent 3 miles from down town Kona. I'm still wondering it's too far from the start/finish line. What do you think? Also thanks for the tip on the book.

#57 Mouse Subject: map & book
peaman@gte.net
I don't know of an online map but are you looking for a specific road or destination? I can help with direction and distances. If you just want a map to look at I can fax or mail you something, let me know.
If anyone coming to Kona for the first or 100th time, a must-have book is "Hawaii, The Big Island Revealed", but Doughty and Friedman, published by Wizard Publications. It is full of maps, inside tips or cool things to do, places to go, things to see, a good list of accomodations and restaurants and shopping. We started using the one the one for Kauai and have found it invaluable. They also have one for Maui. We keep all three books handy for quick reference. |

#54 Kirk Subject: Misc Stuff
webmaster@mile141.com
Mouse -
I realized that I listed the wrong beach park and was just coming to correct it. As far as the pier is concerned, I didn't realize that term was a no-no. I've heard it called that since my first visit over in '89 and in a dozen or so subsequent visits, and have never heard anything about it being frowned upon by the locals. Of course, I live just north of San Diego, so that could expain it. Ugly mainlanders! Also, I wasn't slighting the race activities, I just figured that those would be obvious in the athlete info. I was looking to supply some other recreational distractions. All race stuff and nothing else race week makes Johnny a nervous boy. You need to do some stuff to take your mind off of the race or you'll be wound up so tight by race day, all you'll feel like doing is Balance is a concept that seems very difficult for many triathletes. Just trying to level the scale a bit. And, yes, anyone going over and not racing should definitely volunteer. Not only will you be doing something invaluable for the athletes, you won't believe what a great day you will have! Volunteering at any race is great. Volunteering at an Ironman is really great. Being a volunteer at the Big Show is incredible. That should absolutely go on the list of things you must do in Kona if you aren't racing. Aloha, Kirk |
|
#53 Mouse Subject: Kona beach
peaman@gte.net
Sorry to correct you Kirk, just a small error in your stuff to do in Kona list. The place to snorkle by the Little Blue Church on Ali'i Drive is Kahalu'u Beach. Pahoehoe is about a mile away, next to Magic Sands, and is not very snorkle friendly for those not familiar with the ocean (waves, rocks, sea urchins, etc.).
Also, PLEASE don't call it Dig Me Beach, that really bristles the local residents (it was a San Diego Tri term that some still use). Please call it just The Pier. Also on the to do list is everything that is scheduled race week such as the parade, the expo (which has become bigger and better the last two years), the carbo dinner, the big retails store, and of course the awards banquet (get your tickets on line now). For anyone coming or thinking of coming to Kona in October that isn't racing, please volunteer, you won't be sorry. I could really use some great volunteers for the transition area, especially those really into bikes for bike inspection on Friday. Just go to ironmanlive.com and sign up as a transition volunteer. You'll get a form later listing detailed jobs. Mahalo! |

#52 Michele Subject: What Kirk Said
Kirk got it all (good job). And DEFINITELY eat at Sibu - it is THE BEST restaurant. We eat there all the time when we're in Kona.
Oh yeah and don't forget to go to LuLu's on Ali'i Drive after the Awards Dinner - it's a blast! |

#51 Kirk Subject: It's Hawaii
webmaster@mile141.com
John -
*Added 7/21/03 - Besides the race week activities,* here's a couple of suggestions: The week leading into the race, go to *corrected* the beach at the pier each morning and do the swim. It's a fun social few hours where you get to chat, flounder around in the warm water and check everyone out. You have to go to *corrected* Kahalu'u Beach Park (the little blue church right before Keauhou on Alii Drive) to snorkle with all the fish and sea turtles. It's like being in an aquarium. Just got back from Kona and you have to go to Volcano National Park and see the lava flowing. Go in the day, stop at Black Sand Beach, Eat at the Thai place in the town of Volcano and then head into the park just before dusk to do the 5 or so mile hike to the fresh flow. BE SURE TO BRING FLASHLIGHTS AND SUBSTANTIAL SHOES! It's really an amazing sight to stand right next to the hot stuff and it is best at night when you really see the glow. If you are a scuba diver, book a boat dive at the place in the King K hotel lobby area. There's a great restaurant in Hawi called Bamboo. You can go up there and have lunch and then continue to drive to the end of the road up there and hike down to a beautiful beach up on the north point of the island. Up in Waikoloa resort area, there is a guy that teaches parasurfing that is really a blast. There are also all kinds of windsurf and watersports stuff to rent there. Also up there, you can do this thing where you get into a lagoon and swim with a bunch of dolphins. You have to book that ahead, they only take a limited number of people at a time and it fills quickly. The farmer's market is a few days each week in the church parking lot at "Hot Corner" on Alii Drive at Hualalai. Great local produce. You can also drive to the other side of the island to Hilo and see their famous waterfall (I can't remember the name) Hilo is a long trip and kind of bored me. The other stuff is more fun. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but you can pick up a "This Week in Hawaii" booklet just about anywhere and it has coupons and all kinds of ideas in it. One last thing, make sure you eat at Sibu Indonesian Restaurant under the big Banyon tree right in town. Have Fun and good luck in the race! Kirk |

Yeah - for some reason it actually opened up Sunday so by Monday morning it had 300 people already. By Noon I think it was around 700 and shortly thereafter it sold out. If people are interested, you can still e-mail the race director and asked to be put on a waiting list.

#37 Michele Subject: Kona Half
Hey Kelly - he was doing just great until the run - he couldn't take anything in on the bike AT ALL, so by the time the run came along, he was shall we say - a LITTLE dehydrated and he was throwing up and cramping up, etc., etc. but he wanted to finish which he did. Afterwards, he ended up in the hotel pool then in the medical tent for some refreshments - oh, and 2 IV's. He's been doing great with short distance races here - most always in the top 3. But, ever since last year at LP, then at Kona (and this past race will make it the third time) - his long distance races have found him getting severely dehydrated and he has to be taken out of the race for medical attention. He did fine with his nutrition strategy all along and then suddenly his body said no thanks, not going to GIMB.

Kel, KK, whomever you are...
I'm sorry if you feel I chat too much or laugh too much with all the friends I've made as a result of this page. (you should have seen how much I posted a year or so ago when I was working in a cubicle in a job I hated! Because of this page that Kirk pays for out of his own pocket just so we triathletes have a place to chat and get to know each other, I have found a coach (KP) who's taken me farther in the sport than I ever knew possible. Additionally, I've met so many friends throughout the WORLD because of this page. This page (these pages) literally changed the direction of my life...for the better, and I am a better person because of it. I hope you too can find happiness...these pages are a great place to start...lots of positive people shooting out positive vibes to everyone. Come join the fun But, please don't put anyone down because they irritate you in some personal way...there really is no benefit of voicing harsh words to others. Best of luck to you Tina |
