#4162 willem Subject: race report Antwerp 70.3
Today i went to Antwerp for a 70.3 race.
I had my doubts this was my first long race after my trombosis problems and only back in running for 4 weeks after 3 monyhs of not running. We had perfect weather, not to warm , light wind , little bit of rain. I started with a easy swim and did the 1.9 k in 38 min without pushing myself to the limit. I started the bike part easy until I caught up the leading man of my age group ( 65-69) after 40 k, i saw that he was not riding that fast , and decided to speed things to have a nice gap for the run. The first 2 laps of the run were great , but i got into trouble starting the final lap, luckily a had put enough time between me and nr 2 to ease through he final lap, amd so much to my suprise i won my age group in 6.02.37 |

reason, for coming back to page is 2 fold. Had promised myself that wasn't gonna sign up for any events until got weight below 195 lbs, and maintained it for 2 weeks.
today will start looking for winter marathon as first race, Disney in january a big possibility if entry still available. Second, promised BT, that would be proud to buy her dinner (as friend) if/ when I broke 200lbs. Offer still good, not sure when, but is definately on the to do list for 2010 if she is willing. Not gonna go back to read previous post, will start here, and try to keep up moving forward, not daily, but few times a week. Hope this finds all doing well, both posters and lurkers alike. |

that being said, (I know this is a triathlon page, not facebook)
I am more determined than ever, to someday become an ironman. A goal that won't come easy, but in my heart, think is acheiveable. My training of late boils down to this, no swimming at all, bike only on saturdays, but about 40 to 60 miles each saturday, and walk (not jog or run) 4 miles on my 5 work days and walk 8 miles on my 2 days off each week. My three biggest (what's the word/phrase I'm looking for) obsticles so far(years past) is weight issues (I deal with stress thru eating), training consistancy, and low self confidence. Very proud to say have made major progress in weight department, Jan 1 2010 was 260 lbs, today am 200 lbs (exactly) next week will be a major hurdle in dropping below 200lbs for the first time since 2002. dropping weight, was no quick fix, took changing bad habits (portion size mostly) and sticking with it. |

hey peeps
been off the page for awhile, not even lurking this time. Met someone Friday April 16th, and have experienced more life in the last three months, than in the last 25 years. Me being 43, single, no kids, and a workaholic, loner, this person taught me that I wasn't living, but simply existing, and that life doesn't come to you, YOU GO GET IT.... Of coarse, she had the ability to make me feel like a God among men, as well as a complete worthless piece of poop. Depending on her mood of the day. Finally said enough, Sunday July18th. In hindsight, it took being completely broke down, for me to be able, to realize my strenths and weakness's, decide what I wanted to do with my life, and to pull my head out, and start finding/doing what truly makes me happy in this world. |

Mary and I are both doing the bike leg of a relay this weekend; hilly, 40k course, should be fun.
I'm very close to signing up for next year. We are getting an Endless Pool in the next few months and swimming is my weak point, so with that in the basement, I'm running out of excuses. 9 days to decide! |

Good morning
Ironlucha, there's a thought! I would like to sign up for IMLP next year. I'm not going to, but I would like to! Have fun with your vollunteer duties. Anyone racing this weekend? I have the choice of 2 races, but I'm not doing either. Have a good weekend. |

IronLucha, Thanks, I saw this link from facebook, the word/link is being spread. IronLucha, Are you and Mary doing Lake placid? I was hoping to go to support some friends and even meeting up with the blue pagers for IBSEX, but it's the same weekend as Muskoka long course this year, so i won't be able to go. I did a time trial last night with my Tri club, 20k not so flat course averaging over 35kph. |

"do I need to bring cookies this weekend?"
Did you hit your head on the diving board? What kind of a silly question is that? Of course you need to bring cookies. The weather will be hot until Friday, then temper back a little bit. Right now, the high on Sat should be around 85. But since we are expecting some rain in the next couple of days, the humidity should get back to normal - it has been pretty low. |

Can you run, walk ???swim ? How long will it take?? All the best Josef you made the right pick, only one team can win WC that is of course the orange team ( Netherlands) Here everything is orange, everyone has orange flags etc on there homes , cars etc.Everyone has something orange on, hat t shirt. When Holland is playing about 11 million people are watching the game( we have about 16 million living here) so you can see how big it is. Great weather for riding here at this moment,I ride my bike everyday for 50-60 k. Went to the pool also did 2 x 5 x300, 1 x 200 and 2 x150. 100 m in 1,45-1,51 not bad for me. Working on my running speed as well, on the track yesterday 3 x500m , 4 x400 and 5 x300. Calf still a bit tight 100 m pace about 30 sec , so there is work to be done Train safe |

Overall, it was a 34:17 improvement (13:40:40 versus 13:06:23) on a HILLY course with HOT weather. I think that having Mark to keep me calm/mellow in the days preceding the event is a HUGE contributing factor….although 12 weeks of unemployment this spring probably had a little to do with my aerobic ability. By the way, Mark ALSO had a PB of over 20 minutes (maybe I also kept him calm) – so the Swenson Boyz ROCKED CdA!!!
One of the goals for a Back-of-the-Packer is a daylight finish….and since IM CdA is held during the Summer Solstice, it USUALLY has the latest sunset of all the IMs worldwide. Sunset on June 27th was at 8:43 PM (13:43 racing time), so my goal had been to finish by 8:42 (13:42 race time), and I made it. I give my race an overall “A-“. I had set goals of 1:30 for the swim, 6:00 for the bike, and 5:00 for the run for an overall sub-13 time. (There’s some extra fudge-time in there for transitions.) The swim was a “C” – I survived, but wasn’t even close to being efficient or smooth. The bike gets an “A-“ based upon the “what-ifs” of no mechanicals and a 24+ minute PB. The run was an “A+” based on the sub-5, and having the will to pick-up the speed after having gone through the ‘wall’. Throw in a couple of GREAT transitions, and a daylight finish, and I’m ECSTATIC about the event. For race photos check out: http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_event.asp?EVENTID=59941&BIB=2716 Check out the finisher’s photo…somebody’s PROUD that he still had to have sunglasses on!!! Kevin PS. IM Florida is only 126 days away!!!! |

The 26.2 mile run was hot (83 degrees) for most folks, but the heat (and humidity) training in Florida had me well-accustomed to it. Most Gulf Breeze mornings in May/June were 80, with humidity in the 80s BEFORE sunrise, so race day didn’t seem to bother me much. I was a little affected (effected?) by the actual sunshine, since 98% of all my runs occurred in darkness/pre-dawn. I set another PB of 4:53:58, almost 10 minutes better than I did in New Zealand (5:03:43). My goal was to break 5 hours, which meant an average time of 11:25 for each mile covered. I started out very smoothly, and was at 5 miles in 48 minutes (9:36 miles), and at 10 miles in 1:42 (after one trip up the LONG/STEEP hill at the turn-around) (10:12 miles). Between 10 and 20 miles, my mind started to wander, and I couldn’t get back in charge of it. I was looking for Mark and the Supporters, and not paying attention to what I was doing. Finally realized that I was daydreaming about the 18 mile mark, having slowed considerably to 3:35 (almost 12 minute miles). I did some quick math (always a GOOD sign when I can still figure pacing this late in the day), and decided that doing 8.2 miles in 85 minutes was a possibility. After all, I had been doing it from the start to 10 miles, why not again. Getting up the LONG/STEEP hill at the turn-around was a MAJOR mental hurdle, and I started drinking Coke on the way home. (Actually I started it two aid stations earlier, but it took a while to get into my system). The problem with starting Coke, is that once it gets going, you have to CONTINUE to drink it EVERY aid station, or your body will CRASH HARD (or at least mine does). So it was Gatorade and Coke, and NOTHING else for the next hour+. And it worked!! Mentally, I was disjointed from the situation, because I KNEW that if I saw that I was running 9:30 miles, 12+ hours after starting, then my mind woulda told my body that it wasn’t good. But my mind was in Florida with Kelly, so the Body in Idaho didn’t have any nay-sayers. The fastest athlete (overall winner Andy Potts) was done in 2:52:48 and the slowest athlete was done in 8:16:48. I was 938th out of 2,096 runners, meaning that I passed an additional 66 competitors during the run.

Sherri (my new Cervelo P3 bicycle) provided me with a nice smooth ride, and another PB. I did have an issue with my seat post slipping down though. As I was coming back into town at the end of the first lap, my knees were starting to ache. I looked down, and noticed the electrical tape that marks where the seat height is re-installed after shipping had mushed down INTO the post….this meant I was slowly getting lower and lower. Stopped at the PENATLY TENT, and adjusted the seat back up to where I ‘thought’ is should be since the tape was now mangled. Continued on, and had to stop again about 45 minutes later to adjust it ONE MORE TIME. But at least this time I stopped where the family supporters were at, and got some emotional support. Spent a total of 6 minutes adjusting things. BTW-IM CdA is a HILLY course, with constant ups or downs for 65% of it….but it’s also very beautiful. I did the 112-mile ride in 6:16:23, a full 24:32 faster than my previous best from Canada, averaging 17.9 mph (I had wanted to average 18.6/30Kmph, but….). The fastest athlete (Luke Bell) was done in 4:21:15 and the slowest athlete was done in 8:47:19. I was 1,004th out of 2,199 cyclists, meaning that I passed 1,058 competitors during the 6+hours on the road!!! (Now if I could only get quicker in the swim, so I didn’t have so many folks in FRONT of me….)
The Bike-to-Run transition (T2) was a second PB for the day at 4:28, and an improvement of almost 2 minutes from Canada. I didn’t waste any time in the tent, and the sunscreen slatherers again did a GREAT job on the exit. |

Now to Race Day!!! The swim went…..um swimmingly? It’s painfully obvious which event I dread. When you consider the hours I spent swimming this spring, and then my swim time (1:43:06) was mediocre compared to my Personal Best (PB) of 1:26:40 from New Zealand. I just couldn’t get any smoothness going. It felt like my wetsuit was twisted every direction, except for forward. We (Mark and I) started at the right rear (with NOBODY behind us when we walked into the water) so it wasn’t a crowding issue. I tried “”Channeling”” Josef up in Canada, but couldn’t make a mental connection with him (I think he was doing a half that morning anyway). My mind wandered off and on, and it wasn’t any fun at all. Plus there was a boat at the far end that had a diesel leak, so you had those fumes irritating your nose for 10 minutes each time out. The first athlete (John Flanagan) was done in 45:58 (my FIRST lap took 47 minutes!) and the last athlete was out in 2:20:29. I was the 2,062nd out of 2,264 swimmers (only 202 swimmers BEHIND me).
The transition from Swim-to-Bike (T1) was REALLY good (8:29). The wetsuit “peelers” (NOT STRIPPERS!!!) were very happy, and pleasant to be around. (…and to answer the obvious question, YES, I went to two females instead of two males.) It’s hard to compare one IM transition to another due to distance variations, but this was only 30 seconds slower than my PB at Canada (which had a WAY shorter run) last year. Mark was outta the water 45 seconds behind me, and sat next to me in the transition tent as we threw our shoes and cycling gear on…it’s amazing how we found each other in all that partially NEKKID humanity. The sunscreen ladies on the exit of the transition tent did an AWESOME job of ‘slathering’ on the white goo….I only had a small sunburn on my left wrist between my watch and glove at the end of the day. Saw (heard?) Becky and Kelly Kieper next to the fence on the way outta the bike corral, and got more words of encouragement. |

kevin-swenson@hotmail.com
Well, it was a WONDERFUL day for a little swim/bike/run. But before we get to June 27th, let’s review a bit…..earlier this year, I scrambled around, and got entry into IronMan Japan, scheduled for 13 June. Kelly and I were to travel to Tokyo to see the granddaughter on June 2nd, then we’d go to Goto (is that redundant?) Island on the 9th to be ready for race day on the 13th. I was in the best shape of my 29-year old life, and I was EXCITED to see what I could accomplish. On May 31st, just 48 hours before we were to get on an airplane, the IM Japan organizers CANCELLED the race. Even United Airlines was against the trip, since they wanted another $5,200 to change our tickets to just got to Tokyo and back. I was BUMMED OUT.
I hung around the house, and tried to do some swims/rides/runs, but it felt as if somebody had punched me in the stomach and then kicked me in the groin. NOT GOOD. (Kelly even commented that I was being a pain in the mule.) I checked my e-mail late Sunday night (the 14th), and had an offer from the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC)… offering additional slots at IM Coeur d’Alene (27 June) and IM Louisville (29 August) to any IM Japan non-participants. Well, since Louisville was too close to IM Florida for me to recover well, it was decided to go to CdA, and relive my first IM with my brother (I’m originally from Spokane – about 40 miles from CdA). Some of the air travel credits we had left from the non-Japan trip was used, and I decided to tell NOBODY about the trip…..not my brother, parents, sister, or anybody. Everyone was surprised when I showed up, and preparations were altered mildly to accommodate the wandering traveler. |

Willem, yes Karen and Igrid and their husbands are dutch, I seem to make a lot of dutch friends.
You should consider this race in the future, It is cheap only $125 to enter, mind you there is not alot of swag!?...but the swim is nice in the canal with clear warm water. The bike course is similar to Disney, fast and flat on good roads, and the run is a lot nicer then Disney on a nice paved running path along the canal with plenty of shade, plus Welland canal is near Niagara falls which I know you said you and Corrie would like to see and would make for a nice vacation and is a great time of the year to visit. |

So the buzz for the Philly Oly was - it wasn't. During the sprint the day before, a guy went missing during the swim of the sprint race the day before. So since they were still dragging the river on my race day, the race was changed to a 5K/40K/10K duathlon. The day was really hot and humid so that didn't help. Terrible day for the guys family, he was found dead in the river a few days later - he was 40 years old, in good health, first tri, wife and child were there to see him race.'
In a conference all this week so no working out. Musselman on July 11 - hope things will be way better. |

Another HOT Half, I finished 3rd...third from last. I could have had a better run time obviously, but because circumstances beyond my control, and lack of pot-o-pottys??? Well you'll read all about it in my Race report.
