Right now she's in a class to herself, but who's to know? I wonder how a healthy Michellie would fare. I think the next star will come from ITU racing, perhaps Emma Snowsill? But Chrissie seems to be a champion who's well liked, and good for the sport.

So, my husband did IMC in 05. His 1st and I never had any plans to ever do one ever (oh how that changed.) There was this little old lady working the registration tent. One of many adorable little old ladies volunteering in Penticton. She looks at him and puts his bracelet on ...then she looks at me and in a whisper says "Now you need to behave with him the next couple days. He's going to need all his energy saved for Sunday if you know what I mean." wink wink
I have never blushed so hard! She was like 85! |

Noel that is a great story! Ugh I love it! That is so Canada. We used to hop the border when we were young as their legal drinking age is 19. So growing up in Western NY you get 2 21-st birthdays. I also spent New Year's 1999-2000 at the Air Canada Centre watching the Tragically Hip in concert. It was the best new years to date!

It would have been better had you said you got a ride to Domino's on Biker Dude's Harley and in morning you woke up with a hot escort girl.

#478 noel Subject: Oh Canada
Kitten, Congrats on IMC 09!!!
I know what you mean about Canadian bars. Canadians are friendly, and love to party! Oh Canada! Indeed! A friend and I did Peterborough 1/2 IM, and afterward we go to this bar. It was like 6 pm, but they were about to close, being Sunday and all. There was 1 person in the bar, a "60 something" dude, who was constantly getting paged, and running to the pay phone. The cook was going home, so no food. But the Bartender said she'd stay open for just a bit longer. We order beers and begin a game of pool. Then bodybuilder guy & his girlfriend come in, and apparantly we're on "their" pool table. He sets quarters on the table, eager to reclaim his "turf", and impatiently waits for our game to end. Then Biker dude and his "woman" come in, and we're thinking this wasn't a very good idea. So we play Bodybuilder and GF, they ask why were in town, and we explain what the triathlon was. My friend got a slot to IMC, and I placed in my age group. They now think we are Olympians or something, and begin buying pitchers and shots to celebrate. It's announced to the rest of the bar "who we are", that "we won the triathlon", and we're treated like royalty, with pats on the back and handshakes all around. We try to set the record straight, but our "celebrity" status has apparantly awed the bar patrons so much they are deaf to common sense, so we just go with it. Yep, my friend and I, we both won the race. Of course we can't BOTH win, didn't matter, throw logic out the window. Soon Biker dude joins our party, and the bartender is sending over shots. The bar stays open all night. We order in Domino's pizza, find out the old dude is a "pimp" for an escort service, Biker Dude likes to hug people, and Bodybuilder's girlfriend has trouble doing 2 things at once, like standing and talking....but we have 6 new BFF's! And alot of the night was spent arm in arm, standing in a circle, singing some silly song which was part of a "sacred ritual", which included drinking numerous shots of Canadian something or other, which was only drunk in this manner on very special occasions mind you!. Now I don't recall becoming a Canadian citizen that night. Nor did I wake up with any strange tatoos, or escort girls!, (or for that matter, "likes to hug" Biker dude!). But I did have a killer hangover, and a long drive to Buffalo to catch our flight. But I won't soon forget our impromtu party in Peterborough, with a cast of characters so improbable, it could only happen in a bar in Canada.

Hey all! Kitten wandering over from my home base the Mountain page. I am signed up for Canada 09 - sahweet! I spectated it in Oh 5. It will be IM numero 5...but I have a feelin' it may rank #1 after what I experienced as a spectator! I am very excited.
Also, of worthy note- I'm practically Canadian...being a native of Buffalo NY, which is basically Southern Ontario.

#473 Wayne Subject: Keeping IMCanada Canadian
Someone by the name of Hammerhead suggested that Graham Fraser should not be commended for refunding inappropriate charges. In some ways I agree as long as it is kept Canadian by things like:
- Having Steve King as the announcer who is the true voice of Ironman Canada - Charging me in Canadian currency for purchases I make in Canada - Keeping the maple leaf on garments I buy and on logos - Not listening to all those branding options that so called marketing professionals try to throw around If I was in Japan, I would really like some sort of emblem that characterized their country as well. Keeping the Ironman triathlons international is as simple as respecting the traditions of other countries and not trying to make a one size fits all (except for the distances!) Best regards, Wayne

#468 Mike H Subject: shrinkage
personally, I can tell the water temp. in any lake by the amount of shrinkage.
fairly accurate when you correlate water temp. in Deg. F to the number of centimetres. I know we should mix metric and Imperial units but it doesn't work the other way.

Thanks for all the info.
I have swam in 58 degree water at Whiskey Dick Tri, in the Columbia River (WA) and always use that as my cold water comparison. I would obviously do any race presented before me if I had trained all year. My major objective was to get a better understanding on water temp. So if a ultra swim race lists average water temp at 64, 60, or whatever then I need to be prepared for that by swimming in colder lakes if possible. I think my estimation skill is a bit off and needs some work. But thanks again for the info. Have a great one all. Joe

#461 Ogopogo Subject: Lake Okanagen
Water temperature was warmer race day than earlier in the week. If you can't wear a wetsuit, then wear 1 or 2 swim caps, or a neoprene cap. You lose alot of heat out of the old noggin.
|
|
|
#460 bt
The lake had an inversion in the week prior to IM, so the cooler water came up to the top. That was posted on Slowtwitch earlier in the week to the race. At one point (Tues or Wed before), the temp was reportedly 60, but warming up.
one factor to consider is that for slower swimmers (like myself), colder water will have a greater effect because you're in it longer. |
|
|
#459 bt
I see...and I still think the stated temp of 64 was about right...I am not aware of RDs/officials who make up stats on the water temp, or at least not mis-state it by a large margin.
I swim in a spring fed pool that is 68 degrees year round, and the swim at IMC was colder than that, but not as cold as the SF Bay at Alcatraz (57 the year I did it). I agree it is something to be aware of, but the way I read your post, it sounded like you would make a decision to race or not based on that factor you can't control, which would be a hard decision for some after training all year. |

#458 Joe
Does it matter? Not overly. But my concern is two fold. One, for my wife so I know what others felt. Two, I am hoping to do some long swims in the future without a wetsuit (rules outlaw) and I want to make sure I have a better perspective on water temp so when a race site lists the temp for the swim(12+ miles) I can better assess my ability to endure the temp for that level of time. My concern is that is that lake was 64 then I need to work on my judgement skills or accept that as I get older I am becoming a wimp! Anyways just a thought.
Thanks for the info/responses and have good training. Joe |

64 sounds about right. Might have had some colder pockets here and there?
Does it really matter now? |

#455 Joe
I was at the 2008 race and my wife was racing, I do not know if this has been discussed but I was curious for opinions on the water temp. I belived it to be colder than the stated 64 degree temp. I am not knocking Grahm for possibly lying, sometimes belief can be a powerful help, but I just wanted other viewpoints. I felt it was colder than 64. Any opinions?
Thank you for the info Joe |

#454 Hammerhead Subject: IMC Expo refunds
pprowler@telusplanet.net
Wayne:
Personally, I wouldn't commend Graham Fraser for the 'offer' to refund the exchange difference. It doesn't matter what their administrative reasons for charging $USD are - if that was the case they should have made it very clear on the price tags and at the till that the prices were in $USD. If they really valued the customer base at IMC, they should refund ALL of the exchange on ALL purchases, without forcing each customer to call and complain. This underhanded 'refund' offer simply doesn't cut it in my books. Sorry. |
|
|
#453 Wayne L Subject: Cdn/US Currency on Merchandise
I was informed by Graham Fraser last week that anyone who was charged in US currency for merchandise purchases only needs to contact them. Apparently there are a number of administrative reasons why they did not charge in Canadian $'s for purchases made during the Ironman Canada expo but the good news is they will reverse difference in charges due to exchange rates on credit cards. Graham should be complimented for this. They can be contacted toll free at Toll-free 888-280-9097, ext. 27.

#451 Wayne L Subject: Unauthorized CreditCard Charge
I informed my Mastercard provider that I was inappropriately charged in US currency for two Canadian purchases made during the IMC triathlon. The provider has reversed one charge and I am sending them more information so that NASPORTS can be properly investigated for a charge that exceeded the limits that the Mastercharge representative was not authorized to reverse over the telephone. I still have questions that have not been answered.

Sorry, the quiz was supposed to be funny, (don't worry, I won't quit my day job).
But I am curiousm, 3+ weeks after IMC, how people are doing. Anyone laid up with an injury sustained from the race? Anyone quit/retire from the sport? Anyone doing more races this year? Recovery is important, so I hope all are recovering nicely. Or is recovery not in your type A vocabulary? |

Thanks for the information guys. My friend wasn't very clear on the details, but I know they know not to enter cruise draws, so maybe it was a bit of Ironman Rosey glasses syndrome going on.
The cruise people called my cell phone about 100 times from different numbers. I thought that I had convinced all of my family to stop putting my name into draws, but I guess I need to ask friends not to as well. Enjoy your training this year. |
