#745 FactCheck Subject: IMC Crew
Just to get the facts straight, the "miracle management crew" that pulled off the race in the fire year and all the years of excellent racing before WTC bought all of NAS' races except IMC, is not producing IMC. They are at WTC as they went along with the purchase.
Except for Graham still owning NAS, none of the management people putting on the race now were part of the team that put it on for the 10+ years before WTC bought all of the other NAS races and the production team. |

#744 noel Subject: A slippery slope
Registering and paying money enters you into a contract with the RD and organization. In effect, I'm buying their services, and they are allowing me to participate in the race. There is a minimum level of "service" that a reasonaable person might expect. I'd argue #1 on the list would be the participants safety.
Run out of finisher's shirts, orange slices, pretzels, soup, but you simply can't run out of fluids, period. What if someone was seriously injured, or died because of dehydration? I'm sure that's not the level of service the IMC organization meant to provide. Am I due compensation? I hesitate to say, quite frankly I don't know. But I'll support the race either way. I'm embarrassed for IMC. It's an event I hold dear, and brag about all the time. It's sad to see it tarnished. For an organization that pulled off a miracle in 2002 or (03?), the year of the forest fire(s), it's unfortunate this years race is tainted due to "miscalculation". |

#743 Curtis Subject: water
c_madley@yahoo.com
Tri dancer – I agree we all make major sacrifices to even make it to the start of an Ironman. If I couldn’t get fluids at any of the aid stations (even just one) I would have bonked for sure. I can’t imagine the feeling of getting to an aid station with no fluids. Ironman is the worst and best day of your life. I hope everyone who DNF due to logistical issues holds their head up high, because there is not one person who could of finished the race that day without fluids. As for Sister Madonna Buder getting comped after the race. She’s a nun. Who could ever say no to a nun???
|
|
#742 tridancer Subject: Water
tridancer16@hotmail.com
It was up to IMC to see that water was provided to everyone. They did not and many participants had their day unfairly concluded as a result. Solving the issue of compensation is also IMC's responsibility. Not the problem of participants who have already been unfairly treated.

#741 tom Subject: water
collinst@uwo.ca
I'm not clear about what people think Graham is supposed to do--Give everyone who dnf'd after the bike a comp for next year?? And, if so, why not a comp for all those who think that their time to finish was slower than it would have been if there had not been a water problem??
|
|
#740 tridancer Subject: No water
tridancer16@hotmail.com
Know what, Curtis? Some folks save up all year and work O/T and get up at 4:00 a.m. to train and give up vacation time, skip lunches and make all kinds of sacrifices ... monetary and otherwise ... for that one time that they will try to complete an Ironman. For every participant there is a story. It's not fair that one person's story matters more than another's. And it doesn't seem fair that a "miscalculation" by the RD should be the factor that determines anyone's fate. Just sayin'.

#739 Curtis Subject: water at Ironman Canada
c_madley@yahoo.com
The weather that day was hot, real hot. Hotter than anyone expected (including the athletes). Graham Fraser took full responsibility for the water issue and the finisher’s metal size mix up. That’s more than most organizations would do. As for giving out free registrations (#734 tridancer) like they did in Miami in 2010, as great as that sounds, nobody gets into ironman triathlons to save money…

#738 Hannah Subject: Water at Ironman
Uniongal71@hotmail.com
If water was supposed to be available to everyone and it was not then Ironman should be compensating those that were adversely affected. I have heard about an apology but has anything else been done? If not, people should complain to the sponsors. Maybe they can pressure the company to compensate the athletes and volunteers. I can't believe they won't do anything. Doesn't this race really depend on the good will of the people in Penticton? It looks bad for them.

#737 tridancer Subject: Water, water ... please, water
tridancer16@hotmail.com
They didn't just run out of water on the bike course - they ran out of fluids. There was nothing. Then they shut down aid stations. I arrived at a station that was shutting down and someone asked me if I was interested in the handful of melting ice that was in the bottom of the tub where they'd been keeping water. I took it! This is all coming out of the out and back and heading up Yellow Lake. The volunteers were fried too - no water or drinks for them either. I saw lots of dangerously dehydrated folks (as in falling off bikes, staggereing on the shoulder). Like Noel ... I didn't go out on the run so I can't comment there. I'm surprised no one is talking lawsuit. The sponsors must be pretty embarassed.
|
|
#736 noel Subject: ...and not a drop to drink....
They ran out on the bike course, and I heard the run as well (I dnf'ed in T2, so can't say for sure). IMC switched from Gatorade to Powerbar Perform. It's sweeter and more calories than Gatorade. I don't tolerate it well, it's hard to find, and almost non existant in Canada. I suspect alot of people skipped it, and drank water. Plus dumping water on your head to try to keep cool compounded the problem.
This had to rival "the hot year", 1998. My all time favorite race report is from that race, by TriBaby (Tricia Richter)(see web link). It's long (aren't they all), but wonderfully written. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll smile knowingly, and you'll want to read it again. Speaking of race reports, are there any out there from Dave or Tridancer? |

#734 tridancer Subject: IMC 2012
tridancer16@hotmail.com
I'll be there for 2012. I am also waiting to hear a response from Graham Fraser from what I understand are numerous requests for comps ... apparently Madonna Buder asked and it was immediately granted.
Someone just emailed this to me (from Miami's 70.3 race in 2010): "For all athletes who competed in the race on Saturday, WTC is offering a complimentary race entry into any of the 70.3 races in 2011 listed below*, to include next year’s Ironman 70.3 Miami. WTC will contact those competitors on December 1 with registration instructions." It is one thing to admit a mistake, but it is quite different to actually step up and make good for that mistake. We actually do not recall that another race director or promoter has gone this far before when their event was less than satisfactory." Well, Graham Fraser??? |

#730 noel Subject: IMC
2012 will be 30th annual, no doubt they'll oversell it, should be slots available.
Conditions very tough. I made a rookie mistake of not drinking, and apparantly going too hard for the conditions. But I never saw it coming. My meltdown on the bike was scary. Simple case of dehydration and bonking, but my brain must have been cooked, I couldn't process what was happening or why. I DNF'd. From start of Yellow Lake to just past the top, I stopped 4 times. I absolutely had no energy to turn over my 39/27 bail out gear. After one of my stops, I clipped in to get going again, and promptly fell over. Thank you anonymous spectator who helped me. I was in T2 for an hour and twenty minutes, trying to summon the courage to continue, before I turned in my chip. Honestly, I was too scared to even walk the marathon. There is regret and shame. I take refuge by thinking I made the right decision, but it stings. To quote from Shadowlands, "Experience is a brutal teacher. But you learn. My God, you learn." The Bard said revenge is best served cold. The TriGods must disagree, because their vengence was hot and windy. |

Not sure which part of the hwy has the road work. Folks we are renting from just warned us of the fact in case we were driving up from Keremeos. They said there was construction between Keremeos and Penticton. I'm going up the Coq so I won't go through there on the way. Like Noel, I usually stop at Bear's too but this year I'm visiting Summerland first. I'll see Bear's soon enough though as I am planning to do a pre-race ride of the out and back. You know, cause it's just so much fun.

I know exactly what you mean tridancer. The wind was so strong in my first race that I couldn't read the hanging metal road signs - they were horizontal! And I couldn't coast downhill; had to peddle or the wind would stop me. I found the whole situation to be absurd so I couldn't help but laugh. The volunteers at the aid stations must have thought I was a lunatic. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.

Hey, all!
First ... best of luck to all who are brave enough to toe the line this year! You will have an amazing experience!!! One year's pre-swim tribute still rings in my ears, "Iron Warriors, we salute you!" I still get chills! Dave, your experience is so similar to mine (I actually think we might both have been in the sag-wagon one year). My first two attempts were DNF's, then two finishes, then a DNF. The last DNF was the most fun race I ever had believe it or not. I have never laughed so much on the bike - one calamity after another - you could only laugh. I'm looking to even the score this year - whatever happens, though, I'll be smiling! |

An excellent question Noel. Even now, I'm not sure I would have done more races if I had finished on the right side of midnight. I'd like to think I would have given the way Lori Bowden and Graham Fraser welcomed me into the Ironman family, but who knows. I think things happen for a reason. My 2000 race forced me to keep training and return in 2001.... which forced me to keep training and return in 2002. Funny how one race influences another. My last race was in 2008 and I still feel the need to return to avenge another 'missed it by that much' finish. See you in 2012.

#710 noel Subject: IMC past, present, and future
Geoff, Dave, Great to hear from you. You'll be missed this year, but I'm glad you plan to return soon. Nice to get some regulars on the page again. Just tridancer and myself lately. Tridancer, best of luck to you, have a GREAT IMC.
Question: Can 53 seconds change a person's life? I think it can. Dave might have been a one and done Ironman, had it not been for 53 seconds. And for others who dared to dream in silence, those 53 seconds (no doubt) empowered them to roar "I can!". Times do change, but the essence of IMC stays the same. The experience gets imprinted on your soul, and it beckons for your return. Like thunder in the mountains, IMC calls for you. "If you can force your heart your legs your brain, to serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when in you there nothing but pain, Except the Iron Will which says to them: Hold on!" "If you can fill the unforgiving minute, with 60 seconds worth of distance run. Yours is the finish line, and everything that's in it, And - what is more - you'll be an Ironman, when you're done" My apologies to Rudyard! I applaud all, past, present, and future IMC Iromans! Enjoy the journey. |

Good luck Noel, tridancer and everyone else. I was also on the beach back in August 2000 for what turned out to be a very long day. Seventeen hours and 53 seconds to be exact; but that's a story for another day. I agree that the chat room was far more active and was a critical source of guidance. I recall that ironboy (aka the current RD) organized a breakfast for us so we could all meet. Ah, the times are a changin'. I expect to be back for the 2012 race; which hopefully will be lucky number seven. Happpy training and tapering everyone.

Good luck Noel! I remember coming to these pages back in '99-2000 when the enthusiasm was real and this chat realm was vibrant and new. So many who's enthusiasm was infectious and we could all feed from each other's energy. I trained hard; I trained scared! I stood on the beach on a calm, beautiful morning in August, 2000 and I was ready. And I was ready with thanks, in very large part, to the online community that came here and yet today seems so distant. But the echoes remain and I come here once again. Not this year and not next ... but perhaps, God willing, another warm August morning in 2013 will bring my yearning toes to the shores of serene Lake Okanagan. Cheers! Enjoy your journey! May you find wings attached to your ankles raceday morning!
