#538 Shelley Subject: Athlete coming in from CUBA!
tri_gear@yahoo.com
To make a long story short, Raul was featured in Triathlete Magazine back in 2007. Through a network of friends, we are able to bring him to Canada so he can live his dream of competing in a real Ironman race.
We need to find him a place to stay though. Does anyone know of any homestay programs out in Penticton where he can stay for the Month of August?? Any assistance would be soooo greatly appreciated!! Thanks |

The pothole is back! The one on the paved road shoulder on the rollers before Cawston. Keep your eyes open.

#535 Bill Subject: Oliver
Wetsuits will be on for the Oliver half. Water temp was 19 for the Oliver Olympic a week and a half ago. Its been hot and dry (and windy) for the past few weeks - high 20's to mid 30's for the past 2 weeks. Looks like a cooler possibly wetter weekend (but with less wind) planned for the Half. Oliver is hard to tell for the weather. I would say Thursdays forcast will be a bit more accurate for Sundays event.

#534 triguy48 Subject: Oliver Half ironman
Okay folks.... Oliver Half is this weekend. I am sitting here in sunny Victoria, wondering how warm it will be for us coastal types. Weather network says it should be a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 23 and a 30% P.O.P.
Does anyone know how warm the lake is? What are the chances that they will not allow wetsuits? Want to know what I should be preparing for. Last year at Ironman, I got cold in the swim, wind to Osoyoos, sun-burned on the Richter and rained on for most of the run... anyone want to give me an idea? MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH IS WILL THEY ALLOW WETSUITS????? |

HEY! I am 15lbs overweight is that a joke about my dunlop disease! (My belly dun lopped over my belt)
I ride a trek, I do not know the gears, they came with the bike. My answer is always, if the hill hurts too much, train harder. Train safe and well, have a good one all. |

#532 Armin Subject: out on Fixies
Hwy Mike,
You must have missed the Try to get over it now... it was a joke! Kinda like your advice to someone who is concerned about the IMC climbs and is also 15 Lbs overweight that : "real men ride with a 56/39 and a 11-23". |

#531 Mike Subject: out on Fixies
yeah Joe, we are all out riding our Fixies
|

#530 Joe Young Subject: Hello? Anybody home?
No posts since May 9th? What are you all out training or something?
Climbed Lookout mountain (a mini mtn in Golden, CO) for the first time this year, yesterday. I think it is about 1750ft in 4-5 miles? I know not real precise for all you techo geeks. Went ok. Excited for the big miles to come...and IMC. Train well all. Joe |

I went with a 52/27 combo on 650c wheels. I'd rather spin then grind the hills. My bike times are about the same as yours. |

#525 Darryl Subject: Gearing for IMC
dgparry@telus.net
Hey:
You'll want a 25 tooth gear in back for parts of Richter, Yellow Lake and the rollers. You might want an 11 tooth gear if you want to push the downhills too. Lots of time to be gained there. (I note a petro-canada.ca domain in your post. If you'd like to talk about this, drop by or send me an email message (to dparry@domain-name). Darryl |

#524 KCinCowTown Subject: Gearing Question
I'd appreciate any suggestions as to gearing that is recommended for the IMC course.
I'm 15 lbs heavier than I should be, but still expecting to be a 6:00 to 6:15 bike. |

#523 Mike Subject: opinions differ
Sorry Noel,
but I must disagree on a few points. the run is NOT a "one loop lonely out and back...with lots of hills" it's not a loop; okay there's a few small loops at the start and end but the course is an out and back. and it's really not that hilly. and it is far from lonely; there are spectators all along the course not just at aid stations. |
|
#522 noel Subject: Bike Course
http://www.ironman.ca/bike.html
TriHard, Everyone talks about the bike course, and it is legendary. An epic course with beautiful scenery. But for me, it's all about the run, and IMC is a classic. A one loop, lonely out and back, with little shade, lots of hills, and I guarantee you will find your soul. But that makes the finish line reward that much sweeter, and why people come back year after year. Check out the link above for elevation profile. All bike courses reward strong riders and those who pace correctly, and IMC is no exception. Mclean Creek will get your attention, and the hill just outside of Osoyoos. Richter is long gradual climb, but very HOT. Other side of Richter is head winds and 7 rollers, first 3 gradual, next 4 close sucession and steeper. Flat to out and back, 1 steep short climb, 1 less steep,. Then the road looks flat, but you're actually on the long climb up Yellow Lake. Final climb lined with people, not steep or long, but can be brutal, and any kind of weather (one year cold, rain & sleet). Crosswinds and tight curves on downside of Yellow, a couple more climbs, then descend back to town. Now you get to enjoy the run.... Best of luck and train smart. |

#521 Mike Subject: entry from afar
Rich,
just a warning about the crooks out there that may offer to help you with your entry. there was one guy a while back who said he would register a whole bunch of people and took all their money and then never registered them. come to think of it, I heard that was the same guy that cheated in the race a few years back. Mike |

#520 tridancer Subject: IMC entry
tridancer16@hotmail.com
In the last few years IMC has had online entry after the in-person entry. It's a first come first served thing. Last year they had an additional online opportunity after the deadline for validating in-person entries because quite a few people who picked up entry certificates at the race did not end up validating their entries. I think the online opportunity will be there again but it's not a sure thing. Good Luck!

Hey guys. Do you know if one can register other than lining up the day after? I'm in Australia and would like to do the race, but not make two trips to Canada.

TriHard: One more thing... having completed IMC 6 times since 2001 I can tell you that the bike course is definitely hilly. Everything from long, sustained climbs and rollers to long high-speed descents. Better practise some hills if you're not used to them.

#516 TriHard Subject: Bike Course
Hi All,
IMC will be my 3 IM, but my 1st in Canada. Could anyone out there give me some details about the bike course? I have heard it is supposed to be hilly, but I haven't seen any details, like are there a few large climbs, or is it mostly rollers? What kind of grade and what length are the climbs? Any info is appreciated. Thanks! |

#515 Bill Subject: Oliver Half
birin@shaw.ca
Looks like a lot of changes for Oliver this year, Swim course is one loop, rode the bike course this weekend - IT WAS AWESOME - totally paved and incredible shape. Also ran the course along the river - seems there is a construction project to "meander" the river to allow for fish habitat - so the run course has a new meander to it as well. All of this bodes well for a great 2009 Oliver Half this year

#510 noel Subject: Famous Dave
Dave! Good to hear from you. You couldn't have known at the time, being pulled and pushed by Graham and Lori, gasping for air, enduring the pain. And even years later you might not realise the impact of that moment.
Through seredipitous circumstances, it was your time to shine. And shine you did, my friend. You radiated so much positive energy, that it's still reverberating today! They say there's magic come midnight at the finish line, and you conjured up a most dazzling feat. I was in the stands screaming and clapping as you sprinted to the finish. Your finish completed a dream for all that day; to finish an Ironman. You're finish completed the circle. As you crossed the finish line, I took pride in that fact, shared your joy, felt honor in your finish, and was humbled by your effort. Dave, I'd like to think that night inspired many. Perhaps people saw the TV broadcast, and upon witnessing your effort, were inspired to try Ironman themselves. My advice for you is to sign up for 2010, then train like there's no tomorrow. That way, (Ogopogo & the Tri Gods willing) you can be in the stands ere midnight, cheering wildly for the last finishers. Keep training. I'll look for you next year!! |

I did in fact make it back to the Valley. August 2000 was my first of six IMC's between 2000 and 2008, all with varying successes. As for 2009, I promised my wife that I'd take a year off. Of course, I never said anything about 2010. Happy training everyone.

#506 dave from toronto Subject: Graham is THE man....
ironmandave@rogers.com
Thought I'd share my favourite Graham story. It was August 2000 and getting close to midnight. I was approaching Lakeshore to do the last mile. Graham turns around to see me and then turns to look at the clock. I wish I had a camera with me because words can't describe the look of horror on his face when he assessed my pace after seeing it was 5 minutes to midnight. Well, he summoned a posse (including Lori Bowden) and they did what they could but I finished at 17:00:53. I've always been proud of doing a 6 minute split at the end on an Ironman but mostly enormously thankful that Graham was hanging out on Lakeshore looking for someone like me.

#505 Stringbean Subject: Yea it's me again.....
Been gone awhile doin' the school thing. So NAS was sold to WTC uh? Interesting move. I'm personally a fan of Fraser so I have to think he's got the best of thoughts in mind. I don't know if I would get too nervous about IMC losing the IM brand. Just my .02 but I'm a firm believer that IMC has made WTC and Ironman what it is today. Shout out to any of my old friends on here. Hope all are well.

#504 Triguy48 Subject: NAS Sale
I have been pondering your comments regarding the sale of NAS to WTC. Something that has not been brought up here is the fact that the economy in both Canada and the US will most likely impact the number of registrants over the next few years. It's a fair assumption that WTC has much deeper pockets than NAS. Perhaps Graham saw that selling NAS at this time and taking on IMC as a franchise ensured that the quality of our race would be preserved for the time being. There are tough times ahead for everyone and I believe alot of the triathletes will be forced to rethink their financial commitment year after year. Having a first class event may be the ticket to keeping Ironman Canada alive and well. The fact that Graham still has the reins at IMC instills my confidence that our race will be around for a few more years. Food for thought? I say well done Graham!

|
#503 Mike H Subject: "sold out"
I didn't sy he "sold out" I was quoting Schmuck's comment about "NAS sold out"
|
|
#502 noel Subject: IMC
Mike,
Graham didn't "sell out". He was forced out by the WTC (or whatever partner group bought them last year). The WTC wants to exclusively license it's own events, not have a "middle man" like Graham. His consolation prize was to be able to keep IMC, at least for now. I suppose I should be optimistic, and give WTC a chance....who knows, maybe it will be a superior product than before. I wonder how many NAS staff got let go? |
|
#501 Mike H Subject: Sold Out?
do you guys really think Graham sold out? I'm guessing the WTC saw what an incredible cash cow Graham built and offered him some big $$ and he decided this would be a good time to take it.
of course the WTC will raise the reg. fees and give the athletes less and less for their money... but hey, that's big business. |
|
#500 Mike H Subject: Oxford's not mine
by the way, just wanted to say that it was Oxford's definition of "jabroney" not mine.
and re: Reilly, now there's a true Jabroney. Maybe now that Graham is still owner of IMC he will finally do the right thing and get Steve King Back where he belongs. |
|
#499 noel Subject: WTC and IM
My concern is the quality of the product, and I'm glad Graham gets to keep IMC, for now anyway. WTC pretty much forced him out, maybe threw him a bone with IMC.
I guess it's true, the only constant is change. I'm curious how the other WTC IM's will fare this year. |
|
#498 Mike H
1. jabroney
a jabroney is someone who is a kook or is trying to look cool by doing something very retarded |
|
#497 shmuck Subject: NAS sold out?!?
Are you kidding me? When did this "sale" happen? And what do we have to expect from WTC for future events? I did IM Kentucky the first year and they had some jabroney at the finish!!....What the hell are we gonna do without Reilly?!?!?!?

#496 josef Subject: noel and Nas
"this purchase does not put Fraser out of the Ironman business. In addition to assisting WTC in its transition from licensor to producer of the races he built, Fraser will still own and produce, under license, Subaru Ironman Canada in Penticton, BC. That race will continue to be Ironman branded, at least for the present, and pursuant to the successful renegotiation of the license at regular intervals. Fraser will also continue to run the NA Foundation, the charitable arm of NAS, as well as other businesses in which NAS is involved. "

#494 noel Subject: Ironman Canada Changes ??
So is NAS completely out of IMCanada? If so, do we know anything about any changes (if any) to expect at this years race? Also, US Air used to give out free bike passes when flights were booked through NAS. Anyone know the status of that program? (It's no longer listed through IMCanada website). Thanks!

I think that Michellie has had her day. Chrissie has more Kona wins in her because she still relatively new. No doubt Michellie is a great champ but she's been at it for a long time. I would like to think that Desriee Ficker would give Chrissie a run for her money. I wouldn't count out Natascha Badmann for one more win.
|
|
#489 noel
Right now she's in a class to herself, but who's to know? I wonder how a healthy Michellie would fare. I think the next star will come from ITU racing, perhaps Emma Snowsill? But Chrissie seems to be a champion who's well liked, and good for the sport.
