Was just wondering if St. George was still open. Believe it or not, I may go back one day, just to settle the score, but it will be a while that's for sure. I still remember the words of wise Sue, consoling a young girl who DNFed for the second time in CdA. After trying to talk her down, she finally said, "if you want to finish Ironman, why do you keep picking such hard ones?" Not that any Ironman is easy, I have way to much respect for the distance to say that. It will be IMAZ for me. I know what I am up against, know the course profile, and that the water will not be 55 degrees. But after I conquer that one, I may be finding some non WTC(or whatever they are calling themselves these days) events, which don't cost so much. But for my first, I really want to hear Mike Reilly call out my name.

greetings GR comrades,

haven't posted in a while, I've been on a little ride-about the united states.

big grin

reached Astoria, Oregon from Naples, FL in 83 days, 4629 miles. one hell of an adventure, let me tell you!! heading home to Houston tomorrow, Nd honestly, not looking forward to it. I've become a vagabond and loving it! seriously, I've acquired a new awareness for living simply and without frivolities. getting as much as a hot shower every day is serious luxury. I'm still the same old dab, but I'm a different man now.

thanks to all of you who followed along and wished me well. the good vibes really meant alot from you, esp. mizz (who hosted me and my riding bud Dana), rb, ultrarunnergirl, sue and bt. you guys really are good buds !!

more when I get back home.....

We, in the Woodlands, don't say things like "bite me"....even when Coach isn't playing young Blaine often enough in lacrosse or when Ashleigh's Hunter Jumper class isn't going well. It just isn't done here.

The Woodlands -- you and Whitey Whiterson will just have to find me.

Accordingly, under the protections afforded my under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, I say "bite me.'

The Woodlands is a "master planned" community. Very homogenous. If you're looking for a hometown feel, this isn't your race. A friend who lives there calls it "The Land of the Great Whitey."

Swim is in a man-made lake, which is supposed to be an ok swim. Bike should be a mix of flat to rolling, with some sections through pine forest. Run is multi-loop on concrete, but may catch a fair amount of shade since the area is heavily wooded.

It will be hot. It will be humid. By my yardstick, probably not that bad. But take that with a grain of salt -- I train here through the summer when it's 80 with 90% humidity at daybreak.

The 70.3 races in Texas are not at the same area as the new IM is planned to be. Iron Star in Conroe (half ironman, non m-dot) is probably the closest in location.

I have not been to the Woodlands, so won't comment on terrain, though have heard the area is flat to rolling.

Hot and humid, I'm sure. RB can attest to that.

Vibe....I doubt this race will have any cool hometown feel such as LP, CDA, Penticton, or Madison.

I'm not particularly interested, esp for the last reason.

I am intrigued. I just checked the site, and it's actually the 21st, not 11th.

Has anyone done the 70.3 there? Just wondering what the course is like. Also, I imagine it is going to be hot and humid in TX at the end of May.

mjlrun....there is no place to stay particularly close to the race site anyway, so you have the right idea.
I would stay downtown (if I didn't live here!)...on Town Lake somewhere, or in the 'entertainment district'...2nd St/4th St/6th St (but 6th is for college kids...4th and 2nd area much cooler). You will also want to be close to South Congress and Barton Springs. Should be several choices. :)

Hi, I'm dropping in from the arnge (SE) page to ask a question. If one were doing IM 70.3 Austin where should one stay? I'm more interested in being near music/food than near the race site. Unless, of course, that might be a big mistake.
Opinions/suggestions?

Mizz I am 95% sure as of today I will be signing up for IMCdA for next summer. I'd be 100% if I knew you or some of the others were going to do it.

Flyboy is right you can get some quality workouts in from March thru June. I agree the bike trainer got old this past winter, but it did pay off. We got 4" of new snow up in the hills today at one of the ski areas, so you just never know...

Any word on Sue? Hope see did well!

Mizz no pressure if you don't do CdA, we love to see you and Randy again so we could talk about the Broncos & Chiefs again. razz (stick out tongue)

fly - I guess I am a fair weather kind of a gal but I only got outside a handful of times last year. All of my long rides were on the trainer. I am not looking forward to doing that again.

Go, SuFE and Kate!

Fly...in the central US, we (esp Mizz) are at the whims of El Nino vs. La Nina in weather patterns. Coming off of two very mild winters, it seemed to make sense to sign up for Utah. The reality was that it was cold and rainy for training all the way into April here. I think I had 3 good weekends to ride outside before the event, and Mizz had fewer. And Boulder was still getting snow even in the last few weeks. It's just hard to predict. Though June is a little better.

I'm prob going to Austria next year...at least that's what my friends are telling me. In the meantime, just loving doing short races and having fun, rather than losing my whole life with long training.

Sunday, June 13, 2010 11:21 AM Host: adsl-75-28-65-85.dsl.irvnca.sbcglobal.net

Mizz,

CdA is at the end of June, it shouldn't require much of your longer stuff to be done in the winter would it? 13 weeks would put you at the end of March or early April to start your focused training, not nearly as bad as a May 1 race in my book.

Of course, we're weather wimps out here in So. Cal, we don't have snow, ice storms, freezing rain, blizzards, and all the other phenomena that you have to contend with. For us rain and wind are as bad as it gets for the most part.
