Flyboy, I remember seeing you that morning before going into the water. Not sure if you remember because you were busy body marking (by the way thanks again for volying!)
BT & Mizz are right about the cap & booties if you can find them. I had the cap and ear plugs really helped me. I was one of the one's that got in right after the pro's took off. I'm not sure if that was a good idea or not. It was pretty amazing how cold it was. I did the usual treading water swiming around trying to get use to sticking my head under water. All that cold water, nervous energy mixed with trying to stay hydrated before the race lead to......well let's just say I'm not happy about that, but............things really warmed up right before the gun went off which made for a better start. Not one of my proudest moments. |
|
#5365 windjunkee
yeah, but Mizz, you're a cold-water wimp. Remember those first few cold water swims at Couer d'Alene?
|

#5364 Mizz
BOFF get the booties and cap. if you want them once you hit St George, the expo will be sold out. I was one of the frozen souls that Flyboy helped out that morning. I had booties and a neoprene cap and was glad I did. I liked the layout of the swim course..really pretty. Would be better if it were warmer.

#5363 flyboy Subject: Cold Water and Scouting
BOFF,
Definately heed bt's advice, I worked wetsuit stripping at St. George that year and probably 30 % of the athletes were coming out in some stage of hypothermia. It was not a good situation. If it is 60 + on race day you can always leave the hat and booties in your dry clothes bag, but if it is below 60 then you'll have them there with you. UltraIronRunnerGirl and I went out to Vegas this weekend to scout the Leadman 125 course. Whew, it's going to be a killer for the bike and the run finishes with the last mile at a reported 17% grade. By my math that means 900 feet of climbing in a mile, I'll be lucky if I can crawl that last mile, let along hike it. We rode the first and last 12 miles of the bike course, by my GPS it was 1175 feet of climbing. There really weren't many feet of flat on the section we rode. We drove the whole course for the bike and it is going to live up to the course goal of being a challenging event. We drove along side most of the run course but couldn't find the turn for the last mile. I was thinking of riding it on my bike and running the last couple of miles yesterday morning, but with the lows as cold as they were, I just couldn't bring myself to get up at 5:15 and do it. I'll spend the next few weeks gauging my fitness progression and then in all likelyhood pull the trigger for Leadman and IMSG once I'm confident that I can have a solid race on both courses. |

54! YEOW
Will order the hat and booties Thanks BT |

#5361 bt
Boff...in 2010, the water at IMSG was 54 degrees. A neoprene hood and possibly booties would not be a bad investment. Just sayin'...

Flyboy, Thats an ambitious schedule. Good luck. I'm sure you and your new steed will rock both courses!
Hey Dab! Good to hear from you Shannon and I went out and ran our first race since Zane Grey last April. It was the Calico Trail 50k/30k. I haven't been training at all (work/kids/sailing) but gave the 30k a shot. Shannon went with the 50k. Low and behold, Shannon got 3rd in her age group and I got 4th in my age group - (which says more about the weakness of the field than it does about a stellar performance). Anyway, the weather was good and the course is quite beautiful in parts so it was fun. Besides sailboat racing, with the Bishop Rock doublehand, the "Islands Race" and Guadalupe Island (600 nautical miles) in March, we are planning on running Old Goat 50 miler in late March. I should start training. I may be able to fake a 19 mile run, but don't think I'll be able to fake a difficult 50. Carry on! |
|
#5358 flyboy Subject: IMSt.George
Hey folks,
My Leadman "A" race has changed significantly due to weather concerns in mid/late May. The RD is apparently worried about extreme heat for a 250K day and has rescheduled for March 31. Anyway, where I'm going with this is that now IMSt.George would fit nicely as an "A" race for me rather than a catered training event 2 weeks before Leadman 250K. After I get home from this weekend's trip and I evaluate my training and fitness, I'm probably going to pull the trigger for IMSt.George and Leadman 125. BTW, the Cervelo S5 is beautiful, I just hope that I can do her justice. I'm going to have to start thinking about a name. Nothing in stone yet, but I'm thinking of "Showtime 100" which was the name of the McDonnell Douglass F-4 Phantom that Randy "Duke" Cunningham flew on May 10, 1972 when he became the first Missle Ace in US History. Before he made it back to the ship he was shot down by a Surface to Air Missle and that aircraft now rests somewhere at the bottom of the Gulf of Tonkin. What do you folks think, should my new ride be the "Showtime" or is that too much? |

Thanks for the flight info. Training isn't going too bad for the winter
set a new PR - 2 hours on a treadmill (longest before was 15 mins) - I run outside but could not set another PR - 5 hours on a trainer (longest before was 1 hour) - I ride outside swimming is the usual - 3500-4500 3 x a week was reading the water is really cold - should I be looking at neoprene swim hat and booties? caught a nasty cold this week but luckily it was a recovery week, next week is back on a build week Man time is flying by |

#5355 flyboy Subject: New bikes
I went down today and picked up UltraRunnerGirl's new ride, she's a beautiful black Cervelo S2 with SRAM Rival gruppo mixed with FSA. A fitting and a few minor tweaks and she'll be ready to ride.
The LBS is switching out the Shimano Ultegra Gruppo for SRAM Force on a shiny new Cervelo S5 for me, it should be ready in the next day or two for pick up. It too comes dressed formally in black with Team Garmin Cervelo markings on the seat mast. With the buy two get $2,000 back, it was like we only paid $800 for URG's bike which made it a deal that we really couldn't pass up. There's nothing quite like the smell of new carbon fiber in your garage to up the saddle time motivation, at least until the credit card bill comes due. |
|
#5354 Mizz
bt - good to know. We flew Southwest and it was $50. I talked to a guy that flew with Alligiant and he said the bike was free..which is odd cuz they charge $35 a bag.
|
|
#5353 bt
What Mizz said.
Also....if Frontier flies from your airport, and I am pretty sure they go to Las Vegas, bikes are either free or $20, depending on the fare you get. Best case scenario if you take your bike with you. |
|
#5352 Mizz
Boff - we flew in and out of Las Vegas, rented a car, pretty easy travel day. St. George is about 100 miles from the airport. There is an airport in St. George but when we looked into it, it was super expensive and would have taken about 12 hours to get there. THe course is pretty spread out, so you will probably want a car. T1 is about 30 miles from T2. pretty handy :)

Found the increase you were talking about. IMNA adds $25 if you enter on race day - that cracks me up - hey I got nuthin to do today, think I will sign up for an IM :) Now to make all of the arrangements to get them from PA |

#5348 windjunkee
Hey, no fair. I think Cervelo has, hands down, the best marketing program for bikes in the world. Just go to any triathlon. Every self-loving, spandex clad, Oakley wearing athlete out there rides a Cervelo with Zipps.
I ride so slow I need a random excuse like "well, I don't have a Cervelo". And Mizz, I still love you |
|
#5347 flyboy Subject: Cervelo sale
Mizz,
I know that Windjunkee thinks he hates Cervelos but after riding the S5 he'll be a changed and reformed man. He's a competitor and once he graces the saddle and tickles those pedals and rockets forward he'll be singing the Cervelo Praise Song. All joking and teasing aside, I was truly blown away by the explosive acceleration that the S5 had, that bike really wanted to go fast, even with my fat out of shape butt in the saddle. I've test ridden Felt, Specialized, and Cervelo and it was truly in a different league than its' competition for me. |
|
#5346 Mizz
Flyboy - you know WJ is a Cervelo hater..don't even get him started!

|
#5345 flyboy Subject: test rides
I'm in the market for a new bike and UltraRunnerGirl has given me the green light to buy something shiny and made of carbon fiber. Over the past week I've taken more than a few test rides and have narrowed it down to a handful of good compromises. I'm leaning towards the Cervelo S5 which is basically an aero road bike that looks like a Tribike with a notched frame rear wheel cut out. I can't get over how explosively it accelerates, that bike just wants to go fast. With the more road geometry it should climb better than a true traditional Tribike which is going to be important to me if I move forward with Leadman and 10,000 plus feet of climbing in 138 miles of riding.
Windjunkee I wanted to let you in on this deal that Cervelo has going on, if you buy 2 Cervelo bikes you get $2,000 off the total price. I figured you'd want a P4 and a R5 or something along those lines so that you can be riding a Cervelo for both road rides and tris. |

#5344 flyboy Subject: IM StGeorge
BOFF,
I'm glad to hear that you're back to training and had a solid workout. I believe that I read somewhere that the IMSG registration fees are going up on January 1, you might want to pull the trigger on Dec. 31 to try to beat the increase. |
|
#5343 BOFF Subject: IM ST George
Looks like I may be back on this page for awhile. Tried to get into FLA and AZ and got cut out. Started training for Utah using Ironman Start To Finish book and figured if things were good on Dec 1 I would push the button, the week before I pulled my calf. It is healed and today I did a 3.5 hour bike, 10 min T-run, then 30 min easy swim, felt great during and after. So on Jan 1 I plan on hitting the submit on the registration button. I need to hope global warming works and we keep the weather above 50 degrees this winter :)

#5342 flyboy Subject: Christmas and St. George
Merry Christmas to all the Goldrushers. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year filled with PR's and great race experiences.
I want to especially wish KB and his family a full clean bill of health and a rapid return to his previous active lifestyle. RB thanks for keeping us in the loop on his recovery, we appreciate it. Tug, I've still got to scout the Leadman course, was hoping to get out there this month, but it isn't going to work, maybe January. After that I can take a look at the course profiles and see if I can realistically pull off IMSG as a catered training day 13 days before what would be my A race for the year if not the decade. I never would have guessed that a Full IM would ever be something that I'd consider a B race but in this case it would have to. Besides that it will take some seriously creative financing to come up with the entry fee, hotel charges, travel costs and vacation time. We'll see what comes about and I really would like to pull it together, but at this point there are too many variables to be ready to pull that trigger. |

Flyboy & RG- I think that sounds pretty cool. An ironman training day for another race. Of course I'm being selfish here; knowing you guys would be coming back to St. George would be great!!
With the change in the run course I think you would do very well! Not to mention you would become part of a very exclusive club of the 'LEADMAN' group. You DA MAN fly. I'll be looking for your name in the IMST.George participate list with me! |

#5330 windjunkee
Fly, Go for it! That sounds like an awesome race.
Mizz I still don't have any IM's in me for this year. We're taking VOR doublehand from Marina del Rey to Guadalupe Island and back in March (about a week of cold, hard sailing). We're also running the Calico 50k in January, Old Goat 50 Mile run in March, Zane Grey 50 in April and tentatively planning on San Diego 100 in June. Besides that, Brady is starting his 3rd Season of little league, his first year of Cub Scouts and Katy is now taking figure skating lessons with her 2nd softball season looming in the spring. good times, good times RG - awesome!!!! |

IM St. George is trying really hard to drum up business. They were having a drawing at IMAZ for a free entry. Since I am not willing to do it for free, I entered Flyboy.
|
|
#5328 flyboy Subject: It is RunnerGirl's Idea
Tug,
Basically that is correct, but I'd be racing IMSG as something of a catered training event in preparation for the big dance of Leadman. I'm far from sold on it, IMSG is a pretty expensive venture to do as a catered training event but it might give me a good tune up and build some confidence. IM Recovery would be basically taper for Leadman with a 140.6 mile last big workout. Truth be told, when we went out and scouted IMSG for RG I was scared of the course, all the more so seeing first hand the carnage that it handed out on May 1, 2010. |
|
#5327 Tug
Flyboy- let me see if I have this right? You are thinking of doing IMSt.George May 5, 2012 and then 2 weeks later racing the 'Leadman' May 19, 2012. Is this right?
If so you are 'Superman'. |

#5325 flyboy Subject: Thinking of Leadman
Tug,
RG has mentioned me trying to use IMSt.George as a tune up race for the next event I'm looking at. Last year the idea of Leadman Tri, struck me. This year since RG got the IM Monkey off her back I am seriously considering it. Basically Leadman is a 5K swim, a 223K bike, and a 22K run. A 3 mile swim, 139 mile bike and a 14 mile run to round it into US figures. I'm looking at the Las Vegas Race which is scheduled for May 14, 2011 at Lake Mead. I want to get out and look at the course, it will certainly be challenging, but I believe doable. Further, considering my leaning towards the swim and to a lesser extent the bike portions it is a better fit for my shog (Half Shuffle, half Jog, thanks to Buzz for coining such an succint description of my running). I know that Fisch has talked about Silverman but I'm wondering if I can drum up some interest in the rest of you Endurance Junkees here on this board. This has intrigued me as possibly the next Ironman and the opportunity to say I raced it on the 2nd running would really be bragging rights if 30 years from now it sees the success that Ironman now has. Basically it is my chance to say I was there at the start when I'm old(er) and gray(er) than I am now. What do you guys and gals think? Anyone interested? |
|
